Chapter 13

The news of the arrival of the heroes of the Danelands was not met with joy by everyone in Jelling. The moment they had been sighted, Rakel was even more on edge than she had been in the past few days; something that Rambi was ready to take advantage of.

Every hour, Rakel would get up and go out the front of the house to check what was going on in the city. She was only gone for a few minutes at a time, but Rambi made sure that he made the most of each segment of time.

He gathered clothes and food from around the house for him and his brother whilst Edvin kept watch for Rakel’s return. By the fourth time Rakel went outside to check the city, the boys were both ready to leave. Edvin went out of the window first, Rambi handed his brother the bound packages of supplies and the followed him out of the window.

The two brothers snuck around the edge of the house and into the shadow of another, and then another. They headed for the small corral that was behind the mead hall. It was where all the small ponies and horses that needed breaking were kept.

Edvin was the better of the two brothers with horses, so he ran ahead of Rambi to get two of the more manageable ponies ready for the boys to ride away on.

The boys had been planning their escape for a while and Edvin had asked some of the other boys in the village to make sure that there were saddles, rugs and bridles waiting for them beside the corral.

Edvin found them without any problem and had just finished saddling the two ponies that would be easiest for the pair to ride whilst being chased. They both knew that as soon as Rakel found they were missing, and as Rambi reached the corral, the brothers heard the first alarm being raised.

“Rambi! Edvin!” Rakel called out. Her voice carried clearly over the noise of the city with ease.

“We better hurry,” Edvin said as he helped his brother climb onto the back of his pony and stored the leather bundles behind the saddle.

Edvin opened the corral gate and let his brother ride through before he led his own pony out and shut it behind them.

Edvin had just climbed into the saddle when the boys heard their mother’s voice.

“Edvin! Rambi!” she cried, she sounded desperate, so desperate that people were coming out of their homes to stare.

“We better go,” Rambi said and the two boys kicked the sides of their ponies to get them to move. Edvin took the lead to make it easier for Rambi to ride.

They trotted around the sides of the buildings and when they were clear, Edvin nudged his pony forward into a canter, Rambi’s following out of habit. Rambi grabbed hold of the pony’s mane to keep himself from falling off. The pair streaked down the main street as the heroes of the Danelands came out of their quarters.
